Blog Post #4:Trust The Midas Touch!

You may or may not be familiar with a car service company by the name of Midas. If not, here's a briefing on what it is:
Midas is a automotive service company based out of Itasca, Illinois. It has locations in 17 countries. It has the most locations in the USA and Canada. They give basic service: fluid changes, brakes, etc. Midas's slogan is: Trust the midas Touch!

In Ancient Greece, Midas was a king of Pessinus, Phrygia. After doing a good deed, Midas was offered his choice of whatever reward he wished for. Midas requested that everything he touched would be turned to gold and his wish was granted.

Midas's (the company) slogan Trust the Midas touch, stems from this myth. It means that their touch is golden and they'll do a good job.

Blog Post #3: It's Mega Geek-Out Time

So I was just reading Eragon and I noticed for the first time that on the map in the front of the book, one of the little islands is named Illium (Like you know, Ilium aka Troy?). When I saw it, I stared at the page for several minutes just geeking out.

Blog Post #2: He's Got The Weight of the World on His Shoulders

I think it's pretty safe to assume that anyone who reads this knows what an Atlas is. But do you know who Atlas is?
In Greek Mythology, Atlas was a titan who sided against the Olympians in the war between the Titans and the Olympians.
After the Olympians won the war, they tossed most of the Titans into Tartarus. However, Atlas had a different fate. Zeus sentenced Atlas to hold the sky up to prevent it from embracing the earth (Gaia).
There's also myths of Atlas trying to escape his punishment (click here).
In Homer's Odyssey, Atlas is referred to as:
"one who knows the depths of the whole sea, and keeps the tall pillars who hold heaven and earth asunder".
There's also a second mythological guy named Atlas. He is King Atlas of Mauretania. According to legend, he was a philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer. Supposedly he made the first celestial globe.

Blog Post #1: Welcome. Please wipe your feet on the mat.

Welcome to my brand new blog on Ancient Greece in the modern world!
I hope to post as frequently as possible but however, I cannot guarantee how frequent the posts are because A. I'm a student and I have a life, B. There's such a thing as writers block so I might not always have new material for this blog.
Thanks for looking!
